Are dead trees covered by your insurance?

Dead trees can be very dangerous. They can hurt people and damage property if they fall. But what you may not know is that if you have a dead tree on your property, your insurance may not cover a claim if that tree falls and causes injury or damage. In many cases, because a tree is dead, insurance companies are not covering claims and the responsibility is falling back on the home owner. Insurance companies are saying that the home owners should have had the dead tree removed. As word is spreading more home owners are being proactive and having their dead trees removed. We are encouraging people to contact their insurance companies to find out what is, and is not covered under their policy.

We are also receiving calls in regards to neighboring properties that have dead trees on them that are within striking distance of their neighbors properties. Once an inspection is done, homeowners are sending written notice to their neighbors to have their dead trees removed. From what we have been told, this is putting their neighbors on notice and also making them responsible if damage occurs from a dead tree falling into a neighboring property. We are again encouraging people to call their insurance companies and their attorneys to make sure these situations are handled properly.
